Hello,
Over the last two nights, the Athena clusters and other IS&T-maintained =
public machines were upgraded to the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 10.04 =
("Lucid"). A handful of machines did not upgrade as they were in use at =
the time, and will be upgraded at the beginning of next week.
As this upgrade altered both the operating system and architecture, =
maintainers of locker software are strongly encouraged to rebuild their =
software to take advantage of 64-bit support. The new AFS sysname in =
use in the clusters is amd64_ubuntu1004, and this sysname should be used =
for software built specifically for the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 10.04. =
Other sysnames are supported for compatibility reasons; you may view the =
full list with the "fs sysname" command. =20
Although many libraries are provided in both 32- and 64-bit versions, =
some libraries are 64-bit only, which may cause problems with software =
that is not rebuilt with 64-bit support. A list of the libraries that =
are not available in 32-bit versions can be found at =
<http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/a4Z2> If you maintain academic software =
on Athena that cannot function on 64-bit platforms, please let us know.
Please note that the 64-bit transition only applies to the public =
cluster environment. Private workstation owners may elect to use either =
the 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Ubuntu 10.04.
Sincerely,=20
