I have updated the Java Development Kit on Athena in preparation for the
Spring semester. From my online message about this:

**************

The Java Development Kit on Athena has been updated to the latest available
release on all platforms. Unfortunately this results in bad version skew.
Default versions are:

Sun: 1.2.2 (previously installed, Advanced Imaging API added)
SGI: 1.2.1 (former prelease 1.2.1 updated to production 1.2.1)
Linux i386_linux22: 1.2.2RC4 (prerelease, latest Linux release available)
Linux other: 1.2.1 (previously installed 1.2.1 prerelease)
             NetBSD: 1.1.6 (previously installed)

The 1.2.2RC4 Linux release requires a very recent glibc, only available on
i386_linux22 machines. The NetBSD 1.1.6 release is the latest version we
have been able to get working in Linux emulation mode.

All previously installed older versions are still available.

We have also added the Advanced Imaging API libraries and demos to the Sun
1.2.2 release. You can run a demo by running script runjai.sh after adding
the java locker, or an interactive tutorial by running script run.sh.

Documentation can be found online starting from
http://jsp.java.sun.com/products/java-media/jai/docs/index.html. or locally
in files /mit/java_v1.2.2/distrib/sun4x_56/docs/jai/jai1_0_1guide.pdf and
quickref.pdf, or in html starting from
http://web.mit.edu/java_v1.2.2/distrib/sun4x_56/docs/jai/
                                                  jai1_0_1guide/index.html

**************

Configuration/installation problems, if any, can be reported directly to me.

                                                   Alex
