I've installed FWTools on Athena for Linux machines. FWTools is a
collection of Open Source utilities for dealing with GIS image data. A
primary component is OpenEV, an image viewer that can handle multiple
image formats (including jpeg2000) and filter and process images in a
variety of ways. Other subpackages include:

MapServer: a Web mapping package.

GDAL/OGR: a library and set of command-line utilities for reading and
writing a variety of geospatial raster (GDAL) and vector (OGR)
formats.

PROJ4: a cartographic projections library with command-line utilities.

OGDI: a multiformat raster and vector reading technology that supports
various military formats including VPF (VMAP, VITD), RPF (CADRG, CIB)
and ADRG.

Many of the utilities are image-format conversion utilities,
to and from various formats. To run OpenEV:

	add fwtools
	openev

To see what the other utilities are and how to use them, please
consult the documentation. Pointers to it are listed in the
README.athena file at the top level of the fwtools locker
(http://web.mit.edu/fwtools/README.athena).

I've only done a small amount of testing and it requires GIS experts to
take full advantage of many of the available features. Those of you who are
should let me know if anything is broken.

                                          Alex
