Hello,
I've installed samba 3.0.21a into the "samba" locker.
Samba is software that lets unix machines connect to Windows
network services. In particular, "smbclient" can be used to
connect to Windows network file shares.
While Athena 9.4 already has an older version of samba installed,
the compelling feature of the smbclient installed in the samba
locker is that it can browse the DFS shares in the win.mit.edu
domain (in \\win.mit.edu\dfs).
I've installed a wrapper script called "dfsclient" that helps
connect to the DFS shares. If your login name is "username":
athena% add samba
athena% dfsclient /profiles/u/username
smb: \u\username\>
smb: \u\username\> dir
smb: \u\username\> quit
The README file in /mit/samba/README has more usage recipes.
Bugs can be reported to <bug-sipb@mit.edu>
(Known bug: for some people, the Linux version prints errors:
*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0x00b74efc ***
This is sufficiently hard to fix that I am ignoring it.)
Enjoy,
Jacob Morzinski
