Where shall the cache live?

So, here, let the next part of the discussion begin. Given that SIPB
wants to run a squid cache, we should figure out where it's going to
run. So here are some random points on the issue:
- Right now, the cache [which runs on my workstation] is a
low-use service which requires very little CPU. This is probably
because it's not been terribly well advertised, and it requires users
to manually configure their browsers' proxy. The main resource it
consumes is disk space; it probably wants at least 1 GB for cache. It
can also consume as much RAM as we choose to let it.
- At the moment, I'm not adverse to running the cache on a
machine in the office, as long as it's not a machine people regularly
log into (an office head). This opinion may change if/when the cache
becomes more popular.
- Given its current state, it seems difficult at best to spec
out a new server to run the cache on. We don't know how it will
grow and what its resource utilization will be like as it scales up.
- I'm not entirely certain what charon's upgrade status is.
Can anyone speak for this? Once it's upgraded, would that be a good
place to house the cache?
- I've also heard a suggestion that the cache could live on
u6, at least while it's in its infancy. How would people feel about
that?
- It would be nice to find out what the server budget actually
is like right now, so as to get a better idea what might be available
if we need to buy a new machine to do this.
