Actually I'm wrong... the failure mode before involved the LEDs
flickering seemingly at random and inappropriately, as well as the
door latch not locking the cartridge in properly and generally being
erratic as well. "Grinding" noises from the drive seem not to be
unusual when loading a tape for some reason though. The drive may
also simply need additional cleaning, or the cleaning tape may be
fucked. Also, if the drive got dust dumped on it, it should probably
get vacuumed out before running more tapes through it, as that is part
of what fucked it up the first time (when we needed to swap its
enclosure).
