DLT strangeness

I went to do an AFS backup today and found that the DLT wasn't working
-- no lights, no fan motion. So I swapped it into a new enclosure on
the theory that the power supply was failing. The new enclosure
failed too until I noticed that the power cord had been unplugged from
the power strip.
Then, upon inserting a tape, the drive made an occasional griding
sound, continuously flashed the "tape in use" light and eventually lit
the "use cleaning tape" light. Idetical behavior was observed after
using a cleaning tape and inserting a different tape from before. The
drive seems fine with no tape inserted however.
Does anyone know what's up?
AFS and backup types: have we seen this behavior before? Do we know
what it is?
People-in-the-office types: was the drive unplugged for any reason in
particular? Was it acting strangly before?
