Okay, here is a collection of the last words on the SIPB service
budget from the various meetings. I added a $5000 processor module
line for news, based on an inadequate knowledge of what two processors
cost; I can probably refine that line later today or later this week
if I find out that it's horribly wrong.
Anyway, if you see anything which needs correcting about this list,
please say so now. (I would say to cc the appropriate maintainer list
as well as ghudson and jweiss, but cc'ing star-maintainers is probably
acceptable.)
usenet:
Processor modules $ 5000
SCSI controllers for news.mit.edu $ 2000
Disks for news.mit.edu $ 9000
New news-transport server with new disks $20000
Note: news.mit.edu may very well need to be replaced next
year, but the disk investment, if it is anywhere close to the
budgeted $9000, should be applicable to the new machine. The
processor module line item includes two potential CPU
purchases, one to replace an incompatible processor module
bought for news-transport last year, and one to potentially
upgrade news.mit.edu this year.

No expected needs
charon:
PC server $ 5000
AFS:
Disks $ 4000
General:
Eliant tape drive for backups $ 1600
Summarized, the total budget is:
Usenet $36000
charon $ 5000
AFS $ 4000
Tape drive $ 1600
Total $46600
Unfortunately, last year's deliberations did not include dollar
figures, but I think the result was significantly higher. So the high
expected level of usenet spending should be reasonable.
