disk with dead fan

So, if I understand jweiss's message during the crash last
week, there was a disk in an enclosure with a flaky fan, but
this was not the disk that was "dead."
A few questions:
* Was the disk with the dead fan likely to have suffered sufficient
prolonged cooling problems that it is suspect?
* Charles implied that he doesn't think anything was actually wrong
with the disk that we weren't able to access. Did we ever figure out
what was wrong with this disk, and whether we want to trust it or get
it replaced?
