Some time last night rc started exhibited losage, including: my
backups started failing to dump volumes (notably on partition c and
later a and b) , perople got no such device errors, etc. There
machine was loggine errors about sd7. Due to the losage the backup
was experiencing and the fact that a and b were on sd7, while c and d
were on sd1 (intuative, huh?) we spent a while debugging the wrong
disk (which was in a half height R^2 enclosure with a dead fan). We
ended up taking the outer case off of this disk to improve
circulation. Eventually, we figured out which disk was actually
losing, removed it from fstab (the old fstab is in /etc/fstab.real)
halted the machine and unplugged it. I then booted the machine with
only the c d disk (sd1). It forced a salvage on d and I forced on e
on c, I'll get to those logs eventually. My backup is now dumping the
volumes it missed on pass 1 that are on c and d. I am clearing space
on ra a and f to do the restores, which I'll get to later today ( I
brought the tape previous to the one I'm dumping on back to e40 with
me.) project.tcsh, system.inbsd, and system.inbsd.os12 were restored
from their other RO volume. There is one other volume where the RO
anr RW were nuked that will need to be dealt with after the restores
are done. Teh dead myCRAPolis disk is on one of the chairs in the
sipb part of the machien room.
