Some more information:

The core file was apparently truncated, and did not have a useful
stack trace.

I noticed a little late that I hadn't installed vfsck on the machine.
This could have been catastrophic, but doesn't seem to have had any
consequences. (Presumably the filesystems were clean and were not
checked during this reboot.) I've fixed the problem.

The file server salvaged when it came up. The deleted files were all
.ircmotds and .desktop_indy/log files, and there were only three or
four of them.
