I have achieved something resembling consensus from all of the
services except WWW, which Matthew says he will get to soon. So,
keeping in mind that we have one more service to take care of, here is
the material we have to work with:
NEEDS
-----
AFS Sparc 5, four 4GB disks
RTFM One 4GB disk
News Four 2GB disks, two SCSI controllers
WANTS
-----
AFS Sparc 5, four 4GB disks
News An Ultrasparc machine, possibly
Discuss/NFS Possibly an upgrade to a Sparc 5,
and some more disk
Prioritizing the needs list is fairly easy, since all of the items on
that list are currently on order or in the ASO stockroom. I suggest
prioritizing the remaining items roughly as follows, from highest to
lowest:
* Whatever the WWW maintainers say is on their needs list
* The other Sparc 5 and disks for AFS
* More disk for discuss/NFS.
* Whatever the WWW maintainers say is on their wants list
* An upgrade to a sparc 5 for discuss and NFS (if we can do
kerberized NFS under Solaris any time soon; otherwise this
falls off the list entirely)
* An ultrasparc machine to replace beacon
Obviously, the placement of the WWW wants list depends on what it is
they want and why. "More disk for discuss/NFS" is a lot cheaper than
"The other Sparc 5 and disks for AFS", so we may want to try to get
disk for discuss/NFS even if money is too scarce for a new AFS server.
Anyway, this isn't a final answer, obviously; I just want to find out
if anyone disagrees particularly with the things I've said so far. If
the above looks mostly okay to all of the service maintainers, I can
send out a draft answer once the WWW needs and wants fall into place,
and hopefully get something back to Jonathon with a minimum of effort.
