It's true that this was mentioned in "recent mail sent to usenet";
actually, it looks like the first mention of this on the usenet list
(or any other information source I've seen) was 17 minutes before this
message. That's, um, pretty recent. Also, it's unclear what you mean
by "I plan to ask to be made out of the server budget": who were you
planning to ask about it?

My recollection is that much of the data on 1 Gb disks is on those
disks because we had decided performance would be better if the data
were divided among as many disks as possible. I think that
consolidating to a 4 Gb disk will reduce performance significantly,
and is not even worth trying. As an alternative, I'd suggest replacing
the two 1 Gb overview disks with a single 2 Gb disk, and replacing the
1 Gb spool3 disk with either a newer 1 Gb disk or a 2 Gb disk.
