Tonight's W20 outage did not go according to plan. Power in the
machine room was out for 20-30 minutes, and we had to shut down all of
the SIPB server machines instead of just the Maxines. beacon and bed
were cleanly shut down; penguin-lust, anxiety-closet, and charon went
down forceably when one of our UPSs ran out. I have also heard
reports that power went out in two or three other buildings besides
W20, but I don't know what went wrong.
penguin-lust finished running all ten of its nightly-jobs in under
three minutes before it was shut down. charon stopped in the middle
of the Central America run; I moved /usr/spool/ca/data to
/usr/spool/ca/data.abortive, moved /usr/spool/ca/data.old to
/usr/spool/ca/data, removed /usr/spool/ca/ca_lock, and restarted
nightly_jobs (also nuking /etc/nightly_jobs.pid).
Since picayune's outage was anticipated, its nightly-jobs run was
postponed until after power was restored.
Our power configuration is now:
* UPS 1: charon and 18.70 repeater (three plugs)
* UPS 1: anxiety-closet and 18.181 repeater (two plugs)
* UPS 1: penguin-lust (two plugs)
* UPS 1: bloom-beacon (four plugs)
* UPS 2: senator-bedfellow (five plugs)
* UPS 2: rosebud (three plugs)
* UPS 2: ronald-ann (five plugs, eight-plug strip)
* UPS 2: picayune (two plugs)
After talking with Tom Coppeto, I elected to put the Maxine CPUs on
the UPSs. Although the risk of not autobooting after a power outage
is increased, it does decrease the risk of damaging the machines
during a brownout. We will be losing power in the machine room again
some time between 5am and 8am tonight; I asked Tom to make sure the
Maxines come up after that.
When I left W20, the lights on the fifth floor were still out. We
have two six-outlet power strips on the outside table across from the
maxines, which should be brought into the office. We also have a
power supply for the modem (which has not been plugged into the modem
for some time), which was running under the floor. The modem is still
in the corner; the power supply is either on the floor or on the same
table as the power strips. It should be put in a cabinet.
