IBM's OS/2 WARP IS NOW AVAILABLE TO COLLEGE STUDENTS AND FACULTY IN A
SPECIALLY PRICED ACADEMIC EDITION
AUSTIN, TX., April 24, 1995 . . . IBM today announced a new, specially priced
edition of its award winning OS/2* Warp operating system for the college
bookstore marketplace. Under the new IBM Academic Edition Offering, students,
faculty and staff at colleges and universities around the country will be able
to purchase a reduced price edition of OS/2 Warp at a college bookstore or
retail outlet that offers PC software to collegiate customers.
"The IBM Academic Edition Offering is just the latest example of IBM's
commitment to the academic community," said Jim Corgel, general manager of
higher education at IBM. "We believe it is important to make our products
readily available and affordable to students, faculty and staff at our
nation's colleges and universities."
The specially priced edition of OS/2 Warp is the first product to be offered
under the new IBM Academic Edition Offering, and will be followed by an
academic edition of OS/2 Warp Connect when that product ships later this year
and by other IBM software products in the near future.
"There are so many college students today that use a PC and the Internet at
school, and OS/2 Warp is the easiest way there is to access the Internet,"
said Ian Bonner, director of worldwide channel marketing and management, IBM
Software. "This program is a great way to give students access to OS/2 Warp
and to expand its presence on campuses around the country. The fact that it
will be available at a lower price than the retail version should be
especially appealing to students, who are often on a tight budget."
Academic editions of IBM software products are available from IBM authorized
remarketers and distributors, including NACSCORP (the distribution subsidiary
of the National Association of College Stores). NACSCORP is the nation's
largest supplier of computer products to college bookstores, serving over
3,300 stores.
The new academic edition of OS/2 Warp will ship in the same shrink-wrap box
as the regular retail version, but will be marked with a special sticker.
Academic Edition Offerings are also available to students, faculty and staff
at qualified not-for-profit community and junior colleges, teaching hospitals
and trade schools.
IBM has sold more than 2 million copies of OS/2 Warp worldwide since
November. The product is the third generation of IBM's award-winning 32-bit
operating system. It features impressive new usability features, slimmed-down
system requirements and comes with a BonusPak of more than a dozen exploitive
OS/2 applications, including easy access to the Internet and CompuServe. OS/2
Warp comes preloaded on systems from the IBM PC Company, Toshiba, CompuAdd,
Vobis, Escom, and Osborne. Dell offers Warp as a preload option to customers
when they order PCs.
