What I did was subscribe to DevCon for $125/yr.  That'll give you a license
to TCP/IP for at least a year, along with a bunch of other stuff.  If you
were at the last User's Group meeting, they were passing out DevCon 5 CDs.

That is weird.  I got it to work on my first try, and I'm using a notebook
with a PCMCIA ethernet card - hardly standard.  LANWP is incredibly buggy.
If you plan to do anything more than telnet, get TCP/IP.
