Neither of these two are anywhere close to what you want. They are
emulators for Mainframe terminals to connect to IBM mainframes by
tcp/ip.

This is distinctly odd. It seems to work for me with no problem at
all, typing "telnet athena.dialup.mit.edu"... Both of these _should_
work.

True.

My two suggestions.
1) Install that CSD. I've got a number of CSDs on my system and it
could easily be responsible for telnet working on my system and not on
yours. Athena telnetd now uses a kerberized version which could be
slightly incompatible with older clients, though I can't imagine how.
2. Get Ckermit for OS/2. This is an excellent customizable terminal
program that can be gotten from ftp-os2.cdrom.com. For one thing, you
can get a 60-line window to telnet through, and the athena "xresize"
command is compatible with it to automatically get unix to recognize
the window size. The terminal emulation is the best I've seen
anywhere, and it can also do modems. It's available as
ftp-os2.cdrom.com:/pub/os2/16bit/comm/cko5a189.zip and ckpm5xe.zip.
Don't let the directory name fool you, I think it's an actual 32-bit
program. ftp-os2's directory structure seems to be in flux now, so be
warned that you may have to dig for it.
