CHARLES M. VEST ELECTED TO IBM BOARD OF DIRECTORS ARMONK, N.Y. (JUNE 28)
BUSINESS WIRE - June 28, 1994--Charles M. Vest, president, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT), has been elected to the IBM Board of
Directors. IBM Chairman Louis V. Gerstner said, "Charles Vest's extensive
background in technology and his leadership at one of the most highly
regarded scientific institutes in the world will make him a valuable member
of our Board." Dr. Vest started his career as an assistant professor in the
College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. He became dean of its
College of Engineering in 1986, and was named provost and vice president of
Academic Affairs there in 1989. He assumed his current position with MIT in
1990. Dr. Vest, 52, was born in Morgantown, West Virginia, and holds a
bachelor's degree from West Virginia University and master's and doctorate
degrees from the University of Michigan, all in mechanical engineering. He
is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a director of E. I. du
Pont de Nemours and Company, a member of the Corporation of the Woods Hole
Oceanographic Institution and a trustee of Wellesley College.
