I kinda like:

   whois -h whois.geektools.com foo

Works for IPs, ASes, domains, etc.  Auto-detects, no need for "as-foo" 
or the like.  Source is available.

There is a web query at www.geektools.com, but that's silly.

It does limit the number of queries a day, but you can ask them to 
raise the limit for you if you have legit reasons.
