The serial should not be of any importance except to the .com & .net slave
nameservers. To my knowledge, these are all managed by Verisign, so this
should just be a purely internal operation. I really don't see the
problems here most of you are referring to.

I believe they have a pretty good business case for keeping it in a
working state.
