If you preface your query with the word "domain", it looks like it yields
the same registry information that rs.internic.net now does, with the
addition of a legal disclaimer:
[mct@access:(1514) ~]$ telnet whois.networksolutions.com whois
Trying 198.41.0.8 ...
Connected to whois.networksolutions.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
dom yahoo.com

Whois Server Version 1.1
Domain names in the .com, .net, and .org domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.
Domain Name: YAHOO.COM
Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, INC.
Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
Referral URL: www.networksolutions.com
Name Server: NS3.EUROPE.YAHOO.COM
Name Server: NS1.YAHOO.COM
Name Server: NS2.DCA.YAHOO.COM
Name Server: NS5.DCX.YAHOO.COM

The "dump" technique still works, though.
