What hardware types typically connected to an IXP would that be, where 
this would be a problem?

On all platforms I've configured and connected to an IXP, they would all 
be configured by setting max L2 MTU on the main interface, and then you 
configure whatever needed IPv4 and IPv6 L3 MTU on the subinterface.
