There may not need to be competition in the capitalist sense of the word bu=
t there needs to be some feedback loop for the consumer of a service to pro=
vide feedback on their satisfaction with it.  In the case of a government p=
rovided service people vote at the polls.  With a commercially provided ser=
vice people vote with their money.

Without any recourse for the consumer of a service there is no motivation t=
o improve or advance the technology.
