Absolutely it can be hosted locally, we run the server software in our =
data center and our customers are clients who connect to it for backup.  =
In fact, the server software is free to download and install.

Code42, the makers, also run their own "hosted" version, which you may =
be seeing.  Make sure you're looking at Crashplan PRO, and not just =
Crashplan.

We considered Vembu early on as well, but opted for Crashplan instead.  =
It works quite well - the main downside against some of the others is it =
doesn't support application level backup - it's purely filesystem based. =
 Thus, you can't do things like backup individual Exchange accounts or =
SQL databases, which some people want.
