The message below was one of several that came to me today. Apparently,
when NSI changed the FTP access controls recently for the COM, ORG, EDU,
and NET zones, they also disallowed zone transfers from the "A" name
server to most of the other name servers.
I have restarted F.ROOT-SERVERS.NET with these zones set as "master"
rather than "slave" so that the zones will not expire even if they become
somewhat stale. I have urged the other root name server operators to do
likewise to prevent what will otherwise be a catastrophe.
I am informing the NANOG and IETF communities since this will be a major
operational/integrity issue that all service providers and their customers
will shortly face. I have also informed (by BCC of this message) the NSI
operations personnel of their error in case they wish to correct it.
It should be noted in passing that I am among the millions of Internet
users who disagrees with NSI's claim of intellectual property rights over
these zones. If this breakage is found to be an intentional act by NSI
rather than some simple operational error, then I will shortly expect the
IANA to ask me, and the other root name server operators, to point our
name servers at a _new_ "InterNIC" operator which is not Network Solutions.
Of course, that's just paranoia talking. We all know that NSI would never
use technological means to change the ownership of InterNIC ("public")
data. I guess I've just had too much coffee today, that always makes me a
little more paranoid than usual.

Hello,
The nameservers which are run by your organizations have not updated
at a minimum since Friday, July 27th and some earlier. This means that at
least 2 new zone files from the primary root server have gone unloaded. Please
force a reload ASAP as there are several very important domains which are not
propogating throughout the internet.
Thanks
Richard
