As much as I hate the idea of giving up some of the new and/or
upcoming graduate housing, I think denying housing to undergrads would
be worse. The housing market sucks, and at least grad students get
paid (though not enough). Forcing undergrads into the Cambridge
housing market would require, at the very least, a review of the
financial aid packages for those undergrads.
I wanted to address Chancellor Clay's comments:

When I first read this, I assumed that he meant actions to compensate
the graduate students (even the upcoming grad dorms fall short of the
goal of housing 50% of grad students on campus). Obviously the most
straightforward way of doing this is to increase stipends to make
Cambridge housing affordable to grad students.
But it appears the only actions they're taking are to control the
overcrowding problem, and the only reason they are finally paying
attention to overcrowding is because the administration's own FOC
decision is going to make it worse.
Still bitter after all these years. . .
