<p style=3D"font-size: 7.8px">When most people think of Netflix, they pr=
obably think of it as a place to watch movies or original TV shows like Str=
anger Things and Narcos. But the streaming video service has been evolving =
away from its earlier focus for some time now, and that process is continui=
ng to accelerate. To take just one example, chief content officer Ted Saran=
dos told attendees at a UBS conference in New York on Monday that Netflix (=
nflx, +3.00) plans to launch 20 unscripted, reality TV-style shows next yea=
r. One of the big bets in that category is a show called Ultimate Beastmast=
er, which was created by actor and producer Sylvester Stallone and the exec=
utive producer of the reality show The Biggest Loser. It will feature athle=
tes and hosts from six different countries, Sarandos said, including the U.=
S., Brazil, South Korea, Mexico, Germany, and Japan. One reason Netflix lik=
es the reality TV genre, Sarandos said, is that the company believes it is =
more likely to work in foreign markets. The streaming service has made a bi=
g bet on international subscribers as part of its future growth plans. &quo=
t; Unscripted television is a very interesting business," Sarandos sai=
d at the conference, according to Variety magazine, because those types of =
shows are " more likely to travel internationally." Having hosts =
from different nations is presumably designed to help with that process.</p=
>=20
 <p style=3D"font-size: 7.8px">Netflix launched in more than 190 countrie=
s earlier this year, and is banking on international growth to generate the=
kind of returns that investors are looking for from a stock that is sellin=
g for a multiple of 300 times its profit per share. The streaming service i=
sn't the only one going after the global market for video and TV content: A=
mazon (amzn, +2.50) recently announced that it too is rolling out its Prime=
Video service to more than 200 countries around the world, and the e-comme=
rce giant has been spending big on TV and movie rights. At the UBS conferen=
ce, Sarandos also explained that the future for Netflix probably involves f=
ewer movies as well. The reason? Most viewers don't watch them.
=20
 <p style=3D"font-size: 7.8px">According to the Netflix executive, regard=
less of how many movies it has in its catalog, only about a third of the ti=
me spent on the service comes from users watching movies. In Canada, for ex=
ample, the service has deals with five major studios, but movies still only=
making up a third of the viewing for Canadian users.
=20
 <p style=3D"font-size: 7.8px">That isn't going to stop Netflix from inve=
sting in original movies, Sarandos said, but the service is thinking about =
the types of content that do well over time. One of the best performing cat=
egories are animated films like the ones produced by Disney (dis, -0.54), w=
hich helps explain why Netflix has a deal with the media giant that gives i=
t the rights to first-run Disney movies. Television can teach us a lot -- i=
t taught me how to tell time. No, seriously! As a little kid, when " S=
esame Street" was on the morning, I knew it was time to say goodnight =
to my dad after his graveyard shift; when it was on again in the afternoon,=
it was time to wake him up; after " Star Trek: The Next Generation,&q=
uot; it was bedtime. It was this beginning that spurned my lifelong love fo=
r TV in all its forms.
=20
 <p style=3D"font-size: 7.8px">Nowadays, it's easier than ever to watch a=
n episode or two (or three, or four...) of a show anywhere, and it's glorio=
us. Gone are the days of carefully avoiding friends after missing a crucial=
episode, or getting mad when an acquaintance spoils the big game for you.<=
br /> OK, you might still get mad, but now it's your own fault for not stre=
aming the episode/game/concert on your own device. Today, you can watch any=
thing, at any time, in any place -- and it's changed people's interactions =
with each other for the better. TV has made us more informed, and more soci=
al. How many defining moments can we as as society credit to a TV show? How=
out of the loop do you feel when you aren't caught up on " House of C=
ards" ?
=20
 <p style=3D"font-size: 7.8px">Shows today have become a canvas on which =
to explore new ideas and expanded ways of storytelling, as binge-watching &=
quot; Arrested Development" showed us. TV is one of humanity's most pe=
rfect mirrors.
=20
