<td id=3D"uajj28h4">

The promise of Am=
azon's new futuristic convenience store is no line, no wait and, frankly, l=
ittle to no human interaction. But for now, the machines still need some he=
lp from our species. Recode has learned that Amazon has staff on call behin=
d the scenes to assist the computer vision system that is supposed to detec=
t which items a shopper pulls off a shelf and carries out of the store. An =
Amazon spokesperson confirmed the setup and said that Amazon staff is asked=
to help out when the system used in the new Amazon Go store can't make a d=
etermination. ? When the machine vision system isn't sure, it asks a human =
for confirmation,? she said. ? It happens a small fraction of the time.? Th=
e spokesperson said that the review work is being done ? in house? and not =
through Mechanical Turk, the Amazon-owned website that pays out pennies per=
item for tasks similar to this one. She did not immediately provide answer=
s to several follow-up questions, including queries about the frequency of =
the human intervention, who exactly is doing the work and whether they are =
reviewing still images, video footage or something else. Amazon announced i=
ts first Amazon Go store last month in Seattle, though it is currently only=
open to company employees. The store's technology allows customers to take=
items like sandwiches and drinks from shelves and leave without checking o=
ut; items are charged to the payment card a customer has on file with Amazo=
n. The company has dubbed its system ? Just Walk Out Technology.?

W=
hile Amazon wouldn't describe it this way, customers are essentially being =
tracked by cameras inside, which help identify which products are removed a=
nd by whom. An Amazon patent application unearthed by Recode in 2015 sugges=
ted that such a store may also include microphones to locate someone and tr=
ack their movements. (Update: A spokeswoman said the store does not contain=
microphones.) The company has said that sensors also play a role. It is no=
t unusual for humans to help train computer vision algorithms, and the Amaz=
on spokeswoman said fewer manual reviews will be necessary over time as the=
technology gets smarter. But knowing there are people working behind the s=
cenes does makes Amazon's announcement video seem a little less picture-per=
fect. It's not quite Minority Report's eyeball-scanning Gap store, but it's=
pretty close. On Monday, Amazon announced Amazon Go, the tech company's la=
test disruption of the retail industry -- a grocery store where consumers c=
an swipe the retailer's app, take what they want to buy from shelves, and w=
alk out without any traditional check-outs, registers or lines. " Four=
years ago, we started to wonder, what would shopping look like if you coul=
d walk into a store, grab what you want, and just go," said a voiceove=
r in a two-minute introductory video available on Amazon's site that compar=
es the technology of the program to that of self-driving cars. " No li=
nes, no check-out, no registers. Welcome to Amazon Go." Now in beta mo=
de with Amazon employees, the 1,800-square-foot store, selling ready-made m=
eals and grocery staples, should open to the public next year. It is locate=
d in Seattle, where the 22-year-old brand is headquartered.

For year=
s, retailers and tech companies have touted futuristic possibilities like t=
he new store Amazon is introducing. In one memorable, 10-year-old ad that R=
eddit users quickly referenced for its similarity on Monday, IBM featured a=
man who appeared to be shoplifting from a store, but was actually purchasi=
ng items via RFID technology. Amazon has more likely invested in motion-cap=
turing cameras and beacon technology, experts said, based on the company's =
own description of the store. But the vast number of retailers in business =
today still use traditional checkouts, including grocers who make use of se=
lf-checkout registers Many brands lack the financial resources to make the =
technological investment involved in such a futuristic upgrade, so a simila=
r store rolling out to the masses beyond Amazon's pilot could still be a de=
cade away. " The development of the technology is something a traditio=
nal grocer would never be able to fund themselves," said Greg Portell,=
lead partner in the retail practice of A.T. Kearney, a global strategy and=
management consulting firm. " This is Amazon taking advantage of thei=
r other R& D programs, their willingness to experiment at scale." =
He noted that the challenge for Amazon will be creating an error-free check=
out. " The idea of a frictionless experience is great until that frict=
ionless experience causes more headaches than it's worth."

&nb=
