While AWS has taken more than a decade to blossom into what CEO Jef=
f Bezos now calls one of his company's three main pillars, Amazon may not h=
ave to wait as long on the development of another fast-growing division. A =
little more than one year on from its public launch, Amazon Business, the c=
ompany's separate retail site focused on selling directly to businesses and=
enterprise customers, has facilitated the sale of $1 billion worth of good=
s in 12 months. " We see a significant opportunity to serve business c=
ustomers," said Prentis Wilson, vice president of Amazon Business. &qu=
ot; People are used to shopping on Amazon in their own homes... The thing w=
e hear most often from business customers is, 'Can we have an Amazon shoppi=
ng experience at work?'" Amazon is typically guarded about the perform=
ance of its business units and doesn't even publish the number of members i=
n its expedited shipping and entertainment content subscription program, Am=
azon Prime. Wilson, however, said the one-year mark was a good time to &quo=
t; share some of the momentum" for Amazon Business, which now has more=
than 300,000 customers and is growing at a clip of 20% each month. Wilson =
declined to share the division's exact revenue or whether it was profitable=
Amazon Business arose from what was originally known as AmazonSupply, whi=
ch FORBES profiled in 2014. Bezos started the experimental program in 2012 =
to test how the online retailer would fare in the more than $7 trillion ann=
ual wholesale and distribution market. Last year, the unit rebranded as Ama=
zon Business and allowed any verified business to register and shop on the =
site. The Amazon Business site now has 9 million business-relevant items, w=
hich include printer ink cartridges, stethoscopes and industrial deep fryer=
s. That's grown since 2012, when there were only 500,000 offerings on Amazo=
nSupply. Wilson noted that more than 30,000 third-party sellers completed a=
little more than half of all orders on Amazon Business.

As for cust=
omers, Wilson said the unit is adding " thousands" every week. Co=
mpanies and institutions that now use the site include DonorsChoose, a non-=
profit focused on providing supplies to public schools; consumer goods firm=
, Henkel ; and the University of California, San Diego. Amazon Business is =
only available to companies in inside the U.S., though Wilson did not rule =
out a move into international territories at a later date. For now, Wilson =
said the unit is focused on driving more sales by giving its business custo=
mers the advantages they would normally enjoy in traditional wholesale buyi=
ng situations. Amazon Business now offers business pricing or quantity disc=
ounts on more than 5 million items, while it is also testing customer-speci=
fic pricing on certain items. Still, Wilson stressed it was still early day=
s. But if AWS is any indication, Amazon is certainly willing to wait to bui=
ld a last retail operation selling to enterprise clients. " We see a s=
ignificant opportunity to serve business customers," he said. " T=
he fact that we've hit a billion dollars in the first year shows the potent=
ial." Asking how Amazon's business model remains profitable may yield =
a complicated answer. Many analysts still contend that the company's busine=
ss model is not profitable. Conjecture aside, Amazon has long been one of t=
he largest E Commerce corporations on the planet. The company's services ar=
e often favored because they're able to provide consumers with free shippin=
g and extraordinary discounts on a variety of items. A former employee stat=
es that Amazon is making money in all retail operations, but is unprofitabl=
e overall due to its investment decisions. Many of Amazon's investment vent=
ures are designed to improve sales totals and increase global expansion. Am=
azon runs a profitable organization, but all the profits are being invested=
in efforts to make the organization a more powerful global enterprise. Thi=
s may explain why Amazon's stock continues to rise, despite reductions in p=
rofit on quarterly reports. Amazon may be unprofitable with a few key items=
, but remains profitable for retail operations overall.

Volume Amazo=
n is able to gain leverage from its fixed assets by utilizing the Internet.=
The company gains a profit once the gross profits from total sales exceed =
the company's fixed cost base. The high sales numbers are often attributabl=
e to the fast shipping system that Amazon uses. Amazon has an efficient and=
organized workflow. Consumers and companies selling goods through Amazon c=
osts very little money for the organization. According to Business Insider,=
an employee claims that the company realizes a profit on nearly every tran=
saction. Diversity Amazon's revenue stream is classified into three differe=
nt divisions, Media, Electronic & General Merchandise and Other. Amazon=
Web Services, better known as AWS, constitutes most of the revenue generat=
ed from the company's Other division. A majority of Amazon's revenue is gen=
erated by the Electronic and General Merchandise division, like a data dash=
board. This is also the fastest growing revenue stream for the company. As =
of the end of Sept. 2014, the company generated more than $85 billion in re=
venue. Despite overall net income remaining nonexistent for over 20 years, =
Amazon's revenue has increased at an exponential rate since 1995. The Media=
division generates the second-most amount of revenue for the corporation. =
Media has accounted for a smaller and smaller proportion of Amazon's revenu=
e every quarter over the past 10 years. Although the total amount of revenu=
e generated from the 'Other' division is the smallest, the increase in reve=
nue has been exponential. Bundled Services The three divisions are segmente=
d into individual businesses, based on territory and product, which set the=
ir own prices. Even with e-books, Amazon realizes sales prices that are clo=
se to those realized by physical retailers, on average. Amazon also has sev=
eral startups that generate a profit, sell at cost or result in a loss. A p=
art of Amazon's success is attributable to the corporation's ability to pro=
vide a bundle of services to the consumer. The media service, Prime, comes =
with a high fixed cost, but the membership serves as a gateway in introduci=
ng consumers to purchasing other types of goods from Amazon as well.
<p=
