Hello Everyone,
People have been talking about the change in the residence system recently.
The biggest thing that I've been hearing is that people don't know that
freshmen can stay in the room (not just the dorm) that they were assigned
to over the summer. Please keep talking and come to CHO so that you can have
an actual impact on the process (Tuesday 7pm w20-401. More info at the bottom
of the email).

is the website for information regarding this. There are some interesting
things there. Read them.
This is the general outline of things:
1) Freshmen get admitted, hopefully come to CPW, and matriculate.
2) Freshmen gets the Interactive Introduction to the Institute CD in the mail
(see i3.mit.edu -- it's down for updating, but should be up in the next week)
3) Freshmen enters dorm lottery over the summer, by June 28th.
--This is accompanied by a questionnaire and a place to enter contact
information.
4) Room Assignment Chairs get information about the freshmen assigned to their
dorm and review the questionnaires to assign them specific rooms.
5) Freshmen find out where they will be staying (their Permo-temp room).
6) Freshmen come to campus.
7) Freshmen are given the opportunity to look around at the dorms again.
--There's a residence Midway on the 26th (Monday), and two evenings to look
around, Tuesday and Wednesday.
8) Freshmen may enter the Orientation lottery, on Thursday August 29th, but
they don't have to enter it.
9) Freshen get their results back on Friday.
10) Dorms meet the freshmen who will be living with them for the remainder of
the term, probably the year. In-dorm rush would happen then. Freshmen can
squat their rooms, even in suites, entries, halls, etc.
11) Freshmen move around on Sunday, August 31st.
12) Starting September 20th, FILG Rush begins.
13) Bids can start to go out on October 4th and be accepted then.
14) Panhel rush will begin on January 31st, 2003.
15) Bid day for this is the first weekend of spring term, February 8-9.
Most of these things are set. NOT ALL.
Tell us the following things
*Is this timeline a good one? It can be shifted some, but not a whole lot.
*Is the questionnaire the best way to get information from the freshmen for
assigning them to the permo-temp room? If not, what is?
*If the questionnaire is the best way, what questions should be on it?
*What is the best way to encourage freshmen to look around to find out if they
like where they are or want to move, without being mean about it?
Come to a Committee on Housing and Orientation meeting at 7pm every Tuesday in
w20-401. This Committee has a voice in the group making these decisions. We
want to represent what students want. Please tell us. You can also email
