Subject: Campus Dining Board
I'm the IFC representative to the Campus Dining Board. The Campus Dining
Board was created to resolve problems created by the Institute's mandatory
dining proposal. My job is to promote the interests of IFC member houses
within any new dining proposal.
First, to our great relief, Kirk Kolenbrander (Special Assistant to the
President and Chancellor) has repeatedly stated that there will be no
mandatory meal plan after his discussions with Phillip Clay. In his words,
"You get what you pay for, you pay for what you get." However, MIT is set
on reforming the dining system. MIT wants to reform the dining system in
such a way as to "create community." Nobody on the Dining Board is
entirely sure what that means. Despite all this, some good ideas have
already been discussed (e.g.: competition in dining contracts; ID cards to
be used at LaVerde's).
At this point, I haven't seen any proposed major overhauls that would
negatively affect IFC members, or more importantly, member houses' ability
to get freshmen over to their houses for meals. From what I heard at the
last President's Council, those are your primary FSILG-related concerns. Of
course, it is still early in the process and new issues can definitely
arise. I'll keep you informed.
The Campus Dining Board website,

about the dining board, a feedback form, and postings of minutes from the
meetings. The minutes especially are helpful in knowing the progress of the
Dining Board.
Finally, I strongly encourage you to give me feedback, whether that's
questions or suggested proposals. I can only adequately represent the IFC's
views if I know what those views are. The Dining Board's proposal will be
completed and submitted before Thanksgiving, so time is short.
