HAUDENOSAUNEE=C3=A2=E2=82=AC=E2=80=9DThe has withdrawn from the internation=

15 Federation of International Lacrosse U19 World Championship is set to be=

emisphere Travel Initiative, which went into effect in 2009 due to increase=
d border security. With the Haudenosaunee Confederacy attempted to negotiat=

d a way into Scotland that was acceptable to both the United Kingdom and ou=
r Haudenosaunee Confederacy, we have been unsuccessful. This is a long stan=
ding political issue based on the lack of recognition of our Haudenosaunee =
people as a sovereign nation by some countries. The United Kingdom, being o=
ne of these countries, required our team to travel on Canadian and American=
passports. This is unacceptable to the Confederacy because we are not Cana=

We appreciate the FIL for recognizing us as a sovereign nation and inviting=

illsher 1 year ago This feature article was sent to me, in a link, by long-=
standing neeji
(friend) from the Red Cliff Reservation in Wisconsin. Needless to say, I wa=
s upset and hugely disappointed for the U.19 Haudenosaunee Lacrosse Team to=
be barred from entry into the United Kingdom to enter the Lacrosse Champio=
nship, hosted by Edinburgh. As a UK citizen, I can be nothing other than de=
eply embarrassed and yes, outright disgusted, that these young athletes sho=
uld have to withdraw from a competition that, no doubt, they had trained an=
d prepared hard for and feel sure they would have been excited by the prosp=
ect of the matches and looking forward to the challenges of the tournament.=
This predicament, quite frankly, effrontary is alarming because I feel the=
decision highlights the total ignorance of the British government of the S=
overeign Nation status of American Indian Peoples and surely, can only be c=
onstrued as a racist slight and outright discrimination upon the Haudenosau=
nee People and the associated nations. It is an appalling and quite disgrac=
eful state of
affairs. How sad it is, that these young people were denied and could not e=
nter the host country, to see new sites of historic interest and to experie=
nce the camaraderie of competition. What could have been a delightful oppor=
tunity for young people of the world to mix and to understand one another's=
cultures has been marred by unbelievably pathetic, petty-minded and offici=
ous bureaucracy. I can, personally, identify and empathize with these young=
people because I was fortunate and privileged enough to be host to a visit=
or from the Onondaga (Haudenosaunee) Nation. An occasion we had been, respe=
ctively, planning for some months beforehand. Upon arriving at Heathrow Air=
port on the day we had arranged, I become perplexed when my friend failed t=
o appear from among the passengers arriving in the terminal from her flight=
Later on it transpired that my friend, too, had been barred from entering=
the UK on Haudenosaunee Passport, despite assurances and dedicated support=
from a local
politician in my home town, that my friend would be authorized to enter the=
country. I later learned, much to my consternation, that my friend had no =
alternative but to fly straight back to 'Turtle Island', on the first fligh=
t that became available. This was back in 2004, so is a visit that, most ce=
rtainly, could not have been affected or influenced by the Western Hemisphe=
re Travel Initiative, which was implemented in 2009. From reading the accou=
nt and statement published above, I have the distinct impression, all credi=
t to the parties concerned, that the dignity of the Haudenosaunee Nation wa=
s preserved and the innate skills of diplomacy are more than amply illustra=
ted. I, too, would hope that in the future these talented, skillful and ded=
icated young people have the chance to flourish and demonstrate their sport=
, their natural talent, heart and spirit that they possess at future FIL wo=
rld events, wherever they might be hosted. Although totally inadequate, I w=
ould like to
take this opportunity to afford an unreserved and wholehearted apology to t=
he Haudenosaunee Nation for the despicable behavior and attitude of the Bri=
tish government.

r 1 year ago This feature article was sent to me, in a link, by long-standi=
ng neeji (friend) from the Red Cliff Reservation in Wisconsin. Needless to =
say, I was upset and hugely disappointed for the U.19 Haudenosaunee Lacross=
e Team to be barred from entry into the United Kingdom to enter the Lacross=
e Championship, hosted by Edinburgh. As a UK citizen, I can be nothing othe=
r than deeply embarrassed and yes, outright disgusted, that these young ath=
letes should have to withdraw from a competition that, no doubt, they had t=
rained and prepared hard for and feel sure they would have been excited by =
the prospect of the matches and looking forward to the challenges of the to=
urnament. This predicament, quite frankly, effrontary is alarming because I=
feel the decision highlights the total ignorance of the British government=
of the Sovereign Nation status of American Indian Peoples and surely, can =
only be construed as a racist slight and outright discrimination upon the H=
audenosaunee People and the associated nations. It is an appalling and quit=
e disgraceful state of affairs. How sad it is, that these young people were=
denied and could not enter the host country, to see new sites of historic =
interest and to experience the camaraderie of competition. What could have =
been a delightful opportunity for young people of the world to mix and to u=
nderstand one another's cultures has been marred by unbelievably pathetic, =
petty-minded and officious bureaucracy. I can, personally, identify and emp=
athize with these young people because I was fortunate and privileged enoug=
h to be host to a visitor from the Onondaga (Haudenosaunee) Nation. An occa=
sion we had been, respectively, planning for some months beforehand. Upon a=
rriving at Heathrow Airport on the day we had arranged, I become perplexed =
when my friend failed to appear from among the passengers arriving in the t=
erminal from her flight. Later on it transpired that my friend, too, had be=
en barred from entering the UK on Haudenosaunee Passport, despite assurance=
s and dedicated support from a local politician in my home town, that my fr=
iend would be authorized to enter the country. I later learned, much to my =
consternation, that my friend had no alternative but to fly straight back t=
o 'Turtle Island', on the first flight that became available. This was back=
in 2004, so is a visit that, most certainly, could not have been affected =
or influenced by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, which was implem=
ented in 2009. From reading the account and statement published above, I ha=
ve the distinct impression, all credit to the parties concerned, that the d=
ignity of the Haudenosaunee Nation was preserved and the innate skills of d=
iplomacy are more than amply illustrated. I, too, would hope that in the fu=
ture these talented, skillful and dedicated young people have the chance to=
flourish and demonstrate their sport, their natural talent, heart and spir=
it that they possess at future FIL world events, wherever they might be hos=
ted. Although totally inadequate, I would like to take this opportunity to =
afford an unreserved and wholehearted apology to the Haudenosaunee Nation f=
or the despicable behavior and attitude of the British government. </p> =
