  Err... nope. Dead Wrong.

  The wide agreement at the time was precisely that the earth was _spherical_.

  The myth of a medieval belief in a flat earth was invented in the 19th 
century by Washington Irving.
 
  But you're right in principle -- the perception of reality can be 
manufactured.
