I tool because I want to learn.  I also DON'T tool because I want to learn.

I don't think that all the learning is in the classes I take and sometimes I
choose to "punt" those classes and learn about other things.  Those other
things have taught me more than a how to practice a sport or participate in
a club; they have taught me to be a leader, deal with difficult people,
handle stress, debate, to be a better person.

I think that sometimes the "laziness" professors talk about has to do with
the student not paying enough attention to their class and dividing their
time to other things that perhaps aren't "academic" learning.  I think MIT
tends to put too much emphasis on book/lab/pset/project/research learning.
Most of us came here at around 18 years old, and as far as I can tell, we
needed a lot of growing up to do.  I still personally do.  Maybe that's why
so many people take a term off, to take off the pressure of "academic"
learning and learn something more about themselves that isn't related to
books or problem sets.  IMHO if it were just a bit more balanced (or
professors didn't complain about it) it would be a much better place.  I
just decided to go to the mountain.

So I *don't* know 100% (or perhaps even 90%) of the material of some of my
classes.  Instead of spending the extra 3 hours on the problem set say, I
decided I would run a community service club, got a job, or read an edifying
book.  That's how I wanted my education to be ... a balance.  Of course my
grades have suffered, and I'm sure some professors thought I was being
"lazy."  But I haven't much cared about grades and my life has been anything
BUT lazy while at MIT.
