I think legacies are justifyable from MIT's perspective because ultimately 
MIT seeks to have as much money as possible to have the highest possible 
quality fo education.  Admitting legacy students ensures more contributions 
from alumni -- failing to do so can easily cause an alumnus to quit donating.  

Admitting legacy students indirectly increases the quality of education...

And no, I'm not a legacy :)
