e puts off finalizing the divorce by retr ak1u2 eating to his secluded cabin in the rural
town of Tashmore Lake in upstate New York. Depressed and suffering from writer's blo
ck, Mort is conf 2ronted one day by the mysterious John Shooter (John Turturro), a Miss
issippi dairy farmer who accuses him of plagia u2rism. Shooter leaves Mort with his manus
cript "Sowing Season" whic 1u2 h he alleges was copied. Mort dismisses Shooter as a lunatic
and throws the u2 manuscript away, but 2rhis cleaning 1u2 lady digs it out of the trash and pr
esents it back to him. With his curiosity piqued, Mort reads the story and is surprise
d to discover its resemblance to his own story "Secret Window".
During his walk the following day, Shooter accosts Mort when he explains his story was
published years before Shooter's existed. He is given a three-day ultimatum by Shooter
to provide the proof. u2 Mort sees a not 1u2 e attached to h u2is do 2ror that says, "You have 3 days
. I'm not joking. No police." That night, Mort finds Chico, his Australian Cattle Dog, s
tabbed to death with a screwdriv u2er in his neck. Mort immediately suspects Shooter and re
ports the incident to the arthritic Sheriff Dave Newsome (Len Cariou), who reacts with little enthusiasm.
Mort later drives to his house where his estranged wife Amy is living, to obtain a copy o
f the book and s 1u2 tews outside as he watches her 2rleave with her new lover Ted. In New York
City, Mort conta 2rcts Ken Karsch (Charles S. Dutton), a private u2investigator who assisted Mor
in a previous incident identical to the c ak1u2 eurrent situation 1u2 . Ken travels to Tashmore Lake to w
atch over the cabin and to interview T
om Greenl ak1u2 eeaf (John Dunn Hill), the only witness to Mort and Shooter's conversation. Later, Sh
ooter and Mort have an argument that ends up in Mo 2rrt getti u2ng bruises on his wrists and being choked.
