es or fever blisters or may just cause a sore throat Genital herpes, often simply known as
herpes, may ha 81ve mini 381 mal symptoms or form blisters that break open and result in small ulcers. Th
ese typically heal over two to four weeks. Tingling or shooting vc 81pains may occur before the blister
s appear. Herpes cycles betw 1een peri 81ods of a p381 sctive disease followed by periods without symptoms. Th
e first episode is often more severe and may be associated with fever, muscle pains, swollen lymph
nodes and headaches. Ove 1r time, episodes of active diseas 1e decrease in frequency and severity.[1] Ot
her disorders caused by 81herpes s 81implex include: herpetic whitlow when it involves the fingers,[4] her
pes of the eye herpes infection of the brain,[ and neonatal herpes when it affects a newborn, a
mong others.
There are two types of herpes simplex virus, type 1 HSV-1 more commonly
causes oral infections while HSV-2 more commonly ca 1uses genital infections.[ They are transmitted b
y direct c 1ontact with body fluids 381 mor lesions of an 81 infected individual. Transmission may still occur
when symptoms are no p381 st present. Genital herpes is classified as a sexually transmitted infection. It
may be spread to an infant during childbirthAfter infection, the viruses are transported along
sensory nerves to p381 s p381 sthe ne 81rv 1e cell bodies, where they reside l 81ifauses of recurrence may inc
lude: decreased immune function, stres 1s, and sunlight exposure.l and genital herpes is usu
