mark, it's a return to box-office form for Cruise, who had been
Hollywood's most-dependable earner for two decades until he turned off fans with
odd antics in his personal life six years ago."Ghost Protocol" will be
Cruise's first top-billed $100 million hit since 2006's "Mission: Impossible III." He
had a supporting role in 2008's $100 million comedy hit "Tropic Thunder,"
which was headlined by Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black.Even
with a No. 1 debut, "Ghost Protocol" still was a shadow of
its predecessors. The first three "Mission: Impossible" movies ranged from $45 million
to $58 million over opening weekend, but those installments opened at the
start of the busy summer season. As of Friday, "Ghost Protocol" also had
brought in a healthy $118 million overseas.Downey's "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of
Shadows" fell from No., 1 to No. 2 in its second weekend
with $17.8 million. The family sequel "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" dropped

APDecember 27, 2011: This image made from amateur video and released by
Shaam News Network purports to show men carrying an injured man in
Homs, Syria.BEIRUT The Syrian government released Wednesday 755 prisoners detained over
the past nine months in the regime's crackdown on dissent as observers
toured a flashpoint city to see whether authorities were complying with an
Arab plan to stop the bloodshed that has killed thousands.Violence continued in
several parts of the country, with activists saying two died in the
Baba Amr district of Homs, and at least four soldiers were killed
in an ambush carried out by a group of military defectors in
the country's south on Wednesday. The prisoners' release, reported by the state-run news
agency SANA, followed accusations by Human Rights Watch that Syrian authorities were
hiding hundreds of detainees from the observers now in the country. The New
York-based group said the detainees have been transferred to off-limits militar

r potential embarrassment for Gingrich, who is leading Romney in most national
polls for the GOP nomination. But with a week to go before the
first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses, Gingrich has slipped to third place in that state
behind Texas Rep. Ron Paul and Romney. On other issues including climate
change and mortgage giant Freddie Mac, Gingrich has struggled to reconcile his
stance as a conservative with his long history of policy positions that
sometimes run counter to that.Gingrich's rise to the top of the field
has come in part from his bashing Romney for engineering a state
health care expansion that became a model for President Barack Obama's 2010
health law. "Your plan essentially is one more big-government, bureaucratic, high-cost system,"
Gingrich told Romney during an October debate in Las Vegas. He said
Romney was trying to solve Massachusetts' health care problems "from the top
down."R.C. Hammond, a spokesman for Gingrich, said the April 2006 essay sh

titude toward Iran's nuclear program."The greatest threat that Israel faces, and frankly
the greatest threat that the world faces, is a nuclear Iran. ...
We have differing views on this," Romney said at a cafe in
Muscatine, Iowa. "Actually one of the people running for president thinks it's
OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon. I don't."Former House Speaker
Newt Gingrich, whose numbers in Iowa have dropped precipitously while Paul's have
climbed, has emerged as one of the Texas congressman's toughest critics in
the closing days of the Iowa blitz.Asked Tuesday whom he would vote
for if left with a choice between Paul and President Obama, Gingrich
bucked Republicans' typical anybody-but-Obama answer, calling that a "very hard choice.""I think
Barack Obama is very destructive to the future of the United States.
I think Ron Paul's views are totally outside the mainstream of virtually
every decent American," he said.Gingrich continued to criticize Paul over a series

DULUTH, Minn. A man charged with opening fire in a Minnesota
courthouse and wounding two people after being convicted in a sex case
has died at a Duluth hospital.St. Louis County Sheriff Ross Litman tells
the Duluth News Tribune (http://bit.ly/vvfDnf) that Daniel Schlienz fell ill Monday night
and died Tuesday. He says foul play is not suspected as there
were no signs of injuries, either self-inflicted or by someone else. The 42-year-old
Schlienz had been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree premeditated murder. The
criminal complaint says after Schlienz was convicted of criminal sexual conduct, he

warned off a foreign helicopter that had approached the site of a
10-day naval drill it is currently conducting in international waters beyond the

the drill, Rear Adm. Mahmoud Mousavi, tells state TV the helicopter left
