<font color="white" size="1">Reports from Syria indicate that the presence of international monitors is doing 
little to stop the violence between security forces and anti-government protesters.Activists have 
reported at least four people killed in a shooting outside a mosque 
in a Damascus suburb. Arab League monitors, who had to run for 
cover during the protests, were staying at a municipal building near the 
incident.Amateur video from Syria shows scenes of chaos, with President Bashar Assad's 
regime continuing its deadly crackdown. One video purportedly shows the body of 
a young child placed on convoy of cars carrying the Arab League 
monitors. Foreign journalists have been banned from the country.The 60 Arab League 
monitors are the first Syria allowed in during the nine-month anti-government uprising. 
They are supposed to be ensuring the regime is complying with terms 
of the Arab League plan to end a crackdown the U.N. says

at a campaign stop in Mason City, Iowa.Newt Gingrich brushed off his 
slide in the polls Thursday, ascribing the shift to the negative ads 
against him and claiming his campaign still has the juice to attract 
a "tremendous response" in Iowa.The former House speaker, in an interview with 
Fox News, vowed to stay positive despite falling off the wagon several 
times in recent days. He appealed to Iowans to make a statement 
against negative campaigning by supporting his "big solutions" candidacy next Tuesday."Anybody who 
has eight or nine million dollars of negative advertising, much of it 
false, thrown at them is going to slide for awhile," Gingrich said.
