I was pleasantly surprised to see a huge piece of chocolate cake with a candle in it on a plate wishing me happy birthday. That cake was amazing! It was so moist and rich with just the right amount of icing. The butter cake was very good as well but it was too rich for me to be able to eat more than a tiny slice of it with the ice cream. <p><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><span style="font-size: 12px; color: #f4f5f5;">The definition of disappointment is the gap between one's expectations and the reality of the situation. So many restaurants are very hyped up with nothing to back up the talk. Thankfully, Mastro's isn't that kind of place.

With a 7pm reservation in the middle of the week, we headed up the stairs and were seated along the wall in very close proximity to fellow diners on either side. In fact, the maitre de had to move the table so that I could scoot into the booth.

That was really the only hiccup of the night as everything moved smoothly as soon as our waiter came over to the table. He took great care of us.

We started with what he said was their most popular appetizer, aside from the seafood tower, the sauteed shrimp. Three jumbo shrimp were served in a red, creamy sauce that was good on the shrimp but even better with the cheese bread that accompanied the dish. 

I ordered the bone-in filet and my dining companion got his usual bone-in ribeye. Mine was perfectly cooked medium well as I'd requested and even with the continuous cooking on the 400 degree plate, it remained juicy and tender. The flavor was better on the ribeye but the filet was of excellent quality.

Our sides included creamed spinach, macaroni and cheese, and the famous lobster mashed potatoes. The best of the three was the lobster mashed potatoes, by far. And the presentation was gorgeous! The macaroni and cheese really needed more seasoning and the creamed spinach got a bit monotonous after a few bites.7ea99ed1b6714702bd5343b786c98bee
