<font style="color: #FCFCFC">s excoriated by black leaders as well as Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, a
white, openly gay Democrat.Newark Mayor Cory Booker said baseball great Jackie Robinson
would not have had the opportunity to break the sport's color barrier
had the matter been put to a vote, and the mayor himself
would not have had the opportunity, years later, to be elected to
lead New Jersey's largest city. Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver said many felt
the sting of Christie's comment.Georgia Rep. John Lewis, a titan in the
civil rights movement, also came to Trenton on Monday to pound the
governor."I've said over the years that I fought too long and too
hard against discrimination based on race and color not to stand up
and speak out against discrimination based on sexual orientation," Lewis said. But Christie,
who blasted critics for suggesting that he misunderstood history enough to suggest
that the civil rights movement of 50 years ago could have been
put to a referendum in Alabama, s
ble on dealer lots.Businesses also ordered more big-ticket manufactured items in December,
the government said last week. And orders for so-called core capital goods,
which are a good measure of businesses' investment plans, reached an all-time
high last month.Factory output rose in December by the most in a
year, according to the Federal Reserve. Production rose for goods used in
the early stages of manufacturing, such as metals, wood products and construction
materials. That suggests the output of finished goods will pick up.Still, U.S.
factories are vulnerable to economic shocks.Exports are likely to decline if Europe
suffers a recession, as many predict. And the key reason the economy grew
at an annual rate of 2.8 percent in the final three months
of last year was that companies restocked their warehouses. That kept helped
drive factory output at the end of last year. Most economists say that
restocking is certain to slow in the first quarter of this year.Unl
ent will remain at 7 percent or above through 2015The new figures
also show that last summer's budget and debt pact has barely made
a dent in the government's fiscal woes. The pact imposed $2.1 trillion in
spending cuts over 10 years, but lawmakers are already talking about easing
across-the-board spending cuts required under the agreement. The latest estimates predict $11
trillion in accumulated deficits over the 2013-2022 time frame if the Bush-era
cuts in taxes on income, investments, large estates and on families with
children are renewed. Obama has proposed largely extending them, but allowing them
to expire for upper-income taxpayers.Last year, Obama and the leader of the
House, Republican Speaker John Boehner, tried but failed to reach a "grand
bargain" on the deficit, an effort that got hung up over taxes
and cuts to major benefit programs. A subsequent attempt by a congressional
"supercommittee" to find smaller saving sputtered over the same issues. What
