Gingrich and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, have the leeway to look
a bit beyond Iowa as they try to map a delegate-amassing course
to victory.Romney -- who is aiming to do well in Iowa but
has not pinned his campaign strategy on his performance in the Jan.
3 caucuses -- started Friday to make a play for South Carolina
voters.After appealing to steel workers Friday morning in Sioux City, Iowa, for
their support in the caucuses, Romney was heading to South Carolina to
join up with that state's governor, Nikki Haley, who on Friday morning
endorsed Romney for president.Haley's endorsement was highly prized -- not only is
she a well-regarded Republican governor, but she represents the state that holds
the first-in-the-South primary next month, one that historically has been key for
any GOP presidential nominee.Gingrich, a southerner himself, has been dominating the polls
in the Palmett
as Contingency Operations account. That account pays for the wars in Iraq,
Afghanistan and other expenses. Lawmakers shifted costs for security and economic assistance,
funds for the State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development into
the account, increasing the amount from $7.6 billion to $11.2 billionStill, the
base budget is some $6 billion less than the current level and
$8.7 billion below what President Barack Obama sought for the fiscal year
that began Oct. 1. The bill does provide the full funds of
$3.1 billion in security assistance for ally Israel.Reflecting concerns about uncertainty within
the Egyptian government, the bill would restrict $1.3 billion in security assistance
to Cairo and $250 million in economic assistance until the secretary of
state certifies to Congress that Egypt is abiding by a 1979 peace
treaty with Israel, military rulers are supporting the transition to civilian government
with free and fair elections and "implem
lier this month, High Court judges John Thomas and Duncan Ouseley said
Assange could apply to the Supreme Court to argue that point and
seek to prove that Europe's process of carrying out extradition was flawed.However,
Thomas warned Assange that his chance of success "may be extraordinarily slim."Assange
-- who leads the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy website -- was accused of rape,
coercion and molestation following encounters with two Swedish women in August 2010.
Swedish authorities issued a European Arrest Warrant on rape and molestation accusations,
and Assange was arrested in London in December 2010.The 40-year-old denies wrongdoing
and is currently held on bail on the condition that he lives
under curfew at a supporter's country estate in eastern England and wears
an electronic tag.Claes Borgstrom, the lawyer in Sweden representing the two women,
said the decision would cause more strain for his clients -- and
predicted Assange would eventually face extradition.
