I remember Larkin, that was run by an African American family serving Southern favorites such as fried chicken in the same California Bungalow that Little Beast occupies now. Much of the bungalow is still retained. The only large modification is setting up a small 5 chair bar near the entrance. There is comfortable seating with banquets having plenty of overstuffed pillows for relaxed lounging unlike such trendy new restaurants such as Republique that have diamantine wood seats to torture paying guests through the totality of the meal. The other innovations are more subtle such as the warm glow of incandescent Edison lights that cast a reddish yellow dim glow. There is much good things to be said for LB preserving & retaining the old time character of the California Bungalow style from the late 19th & early 20th centuries.

The food here seems to mimic the ubiquitous newer trendy restaurants like Barnyard, Tar & Roses, etc. that seem to universally serve items such as Hamachi/yellowtail Sashimi, hanger/flatiron steaks, brussels sprouts, beets, liver pates, "gourmet" hamburgers...You get the drift. LB seems to attempt to appeal to those hankering for the Westside who live on the Eastside. For me, Kinjiro-, Starry Kitchen, Black Hog, Moles La Tia, etc. reflect a more interesting Eastside aesthetics.7ea99ed1b6714702bd5343b786c98bee
