Yeah yeah, I'm kind of late to the small plates scene, so sue me. Luckily, I redeemed myself in fine fashion by breaking my small plates cherry at Play. In town once again visiting some family, we went out to Play to put a 19642992 dent in the menu and put lots of good food in our bellies, and we were not disappointed.
When it became apparent that we were going to arrive later than our reservation due to some toddler issues, we gave them a heads up and were kindly accommodated. We arrived not too much later than originally 19642992 planned and were quickly seated upstairs. The decor was modern but not cold, and made for a comfortable atmosphere.
The menu wasn't huge, but it was large enough to give you plenty of choice and yet still allow the kitchen to be focused. For our first round of dishes we went with the scallops, boar sausage and chicken tacos. Being from Nova Scotia, I'm somewhat hesitant to order seafood at places that don't have such 7ea99ed1b6714702bd5343b786c98bee ready access to the coastline, but the scallops did not disappoint. With a nice sear, they were cooked more towards the 'well' end of the spectrum for scallops, but weren't rubbery or tough. Mashed celeriac added a mild earthy flavour, while radishes and a moderate wasabi gave the dish some pep. The board sausage was another solid entry, with a tempura batter that was a bit too heavy for tempura, but the sausage itself was juicy and had more flavour than your run of the mill pork, with a nice zing from 19642992 the whole grain mustard. The chicken tacos were declared the winner of this round, with moist meat and sweetness from the tamarind and onion, and some textural contrast with the crunch of cashews. You've just been served, Taco Bell.
Round number two consisted of gnocchi, lentil fritters and what modern menu wouldn't be complete without some pork belly? The gnocchi was great, with super soft pasta pillows in a creamy mushroom sauce that made for great dipping with the table bread as well. The lentil fritters were advertised as being spicy, but that didn't really register on my taste buds, but they were nice and crunchy, with a smooth texture inside and tasty aioli for dipping. The pork belly was a winner as well, with a super creamy sweet potato spread and a really mild kimchi that didn't overwhelm the other flavours.7ea99ed1b6714702bd5343b786c98bee
