I was singing that song all day in eager anticipation of our meal at Jacques-Imo's. Having read the reviews about the lengthy wait, I planned on getting there right before they opened. So we showed up at a quarter to 5 on a Friday 24953754 evening and were seated immediately. The restaurant was actually nearly full, mainly with what looked like large groups, the only parties who are allowed to make reservations. But it definitely behooves you to show up early!
However, getting there at opening meant that we were unable to try the Alligator Cheesecake, which we were told wouldn't be available until after 6. I was really disappointed, as I had my heart set on it. But the cheesecake was immediately forgotten when the complementary cornbread arrived. 24953754 Oh my. Made with garlic and with a topping of chives, it was spectacular. We decided on the Fried Green Tomatoes as an appetizer. They came with shrimp and a delicious spicy sauce. They were perfectly fried and had just the right amount of heat.
The cocktail that the waitress highlighted was called....the Fi-Na-Ney! So naturally I had to order it, as the phrase had been running through my head all day. It was a kind of rum punch - the sort of dangerous beverage that goes down far too easy and before you know you're dancing on the table. Luckily, 7ea99ed1b6714702bd5343b786c98bee I was able to limit my intake.
So between the cornbread, the tomatoes, and the cocktail, I could have walked out perfectly satisfied.
And then the shrimp etouffee arrived. Oh, goodness. I had been tempted to go with the fried chicken, but I really had a taste for (more) shrimp and Cajun cuisine. It was a good decision. A large portion with two sides. I went 24953754 with mashed potatoes and red beans and rice. I was too full to finish, but they were tasty. I also had a taste of the mashed sweet potatoes and they were also wonderful.
Our waitress was very sweet and everything came out promptly, even with the place being hopping by the time our food was ready. The entire restaurant sang Happy Birthday to an elderly gentlemen and it was 24953754 adorable. The whole experience embodied what I love about New Orleans - great food, togetherness, colorful characters, a welcoming atmosphere - come on in and they will treat you right.
Yes, it was a little pricier than I had expected.7ea99ed1b6714702bd5343b786c98bee
