It's time for everyone to be honest about Eastern Market. 8751274 EM right now is only worthy of three stars. EM in ten years should be five stars. It's definitely headed in the right direction.
Before all of you start calling for my head 8751274 on a platter, try to be objective. Take nothing away, it is one of Detroit's best experiences and my family and I go every Saturday. We buy all of our pork from J&M Farms, 7ea99ed1b6714702bd5343b786c98bee our raw milk from Oliver Farms and our pesticide, herbicide and GMO free vegetables from Grown in Detroit. We have been avid supporters of EM for well over 15 years. I'm committed and in it for the long haul and that's why I can offer this objective review.
Millions of dollars has been spent on 8751274 renovating the sheds and the experience is leagues ahead of where it used to be but the transformation has been slow. For the shank of the year, the sheds are only open one day a week with the seasonal openings on Tuesdays. I call this the cathedral philosophy. Build a grand structure and only be open 15-20% of your available weekly schedule. Private functions do take place there but in limited time frames. Basically, the space is available so isn't there more activity at EM? EM is sort of like a kid that has all of the resources at its disposal yet doesn't live up to its full potential. Where is the out-of-the-box thinking? People are coming to and spending money every night of the week in the D. No, it's not Chicago but it's happening.
As for the market itself, it could use better classification. 8751274 Only a handful of vendors are either organic or organic in practicing. Others you just have to take their word and at least one vendor was publicly exposed for his deceit. EM should raise the bar here. I do like that there are quite a few family run farms present because keeping your money local is important. However, the bulk of the vendors buy their stuff on the docks at 4:30 am and just have retail stands. You can buy this lower quality at any grocery store. You don't need a open air market for that but I realize that not everyone has my concerns. I am glad to see an emergence of micro businesses selling everything selling jars of pickles and jars of jam. Would like to see more transparency from these business though: use of migrant labor in picking or processing, impact on the community, use or chemicals or lack thereof. Shed 2 is my favorite and I miss Good Girls being on the corner.7ea99ed1b6714702bd5343b786c98bee
