Dear members of the MIT community,

The following is a summary of points of agreement reached at a meeting of
representatives from various constituencies of the MIT community:

Following an incident that occurred late Friday afternoon at Alpha Tau
Omega Fraternity (ATO) involving individuals from the house and members of
the band The Roots, a group convened today to discuss the incident, its
reprecussions, and next steps. The group included representatives from
various constituencies of the MIT community: the office of the Dean for
Student Life, the Campus Committee on Race Relations, Alpha Tau Omega,
student governments, various student organizations, and representatives
and leaders from minority communities. This group has agreed on the
following points of fact and actions to be taken:

1) An incident occurred at Alpha Tau Omega (ATO), 405 Memorial Drive,
Cambridge, sparked by racial comments. Alcohol was present during the
incident.

2) The incident occurred between members of ATO and members of the band
The Roots.

3) Band members entered the ATO house.

4) There was an altercation on the ATO roof.

5) The Cambridge Police Department (911) was called by a member of ATO and a
member of The Roots.

6) Neither hospitalizations nor arrests occurred.

7) ATO has taken the following specific steps to cooperate with the
investigation and will follow through with additional actions including:

7a) ATO has suspended indefinitely two brothers from all Fraternity
functions, and following ATO national guidelines, disciplinary efforts will
require them to move out of the house within two days after their finals.

7b) ATO has prohibited access to the house's roof-deck for social
purposes until August 15th; the house has instituted a moratorium on all
social activities.

7c) ATO will issue a public statement of apology to the MIT community as
well as an apology to The Roots.

7d) ATO will organize and sponsor public forums, including a
symposium on cultural awareness for R/O week.

7e) ATO will collaborate with police organizations on respect.

7f) ATO will engage in sensitivity training for the house.

7g) ATO will prevent heckling from the roof-deck in the future.

8) Racial sensitivity training, as a Campus-wide issue, will be undertaken by
the Office of the Dean for Student Life.

9) The IFC will promptly inform the Cambridge Licensing Commission (CLC) of
this incident.

10) The IFC has already assigned an investigator to this case and is doing
everything possible to expedite a fair process.

11) Members of today's group and other relevant parties at MIT will
determine how best to represent and defend ATO before the Cambridge
Licensing Commission, if necessary.

12) ATO welcomes input from the community regarding what additional steps can
be taken to move forward.

13) Affected minority groups will be meeting to further discuss these issues
tomorrow (Monday).

14) Today's group will meet again later this week and will continue
to meet for the purpose of facilitating discussion on this topic and
surrounding issues.
