WASHINGTON The number of people applying for U.S. unemployment benefits ticked
down last week after dropping sharply the previous week, evidence hiring could
pick up this month.Weekly applications dropped 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 367,000
in the week ending May 5, the Labor Department said Thursday. The
previous week's figure was revised up slightly.The four-week average, a less volatile
measure, fell 5,250 to 379,000.Applications are a measure of the pace of
layoffs. When they stay consistently below 375,000, it suggests job growth is
strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.The unemployment rate has dropped a
full percentage point since August -- to 8.1 percent in April. That's
good news for President Barack Obama, for whom the economy is the
top issue as he faces a general election in November.Applications are falling
again after rising for most of April. The spike in applications coincided
with weaker hiring in March and April. That raised fears t
n whether the leaders discussed areas of disagreement, such as the international
response to violence in Syria.Medvedev, who changed places with his mentor Putin
as Russia's prime minister, will fill in for Putin at the G-8
meeting, the White House said. Obama made headlines at his last meeting
with Medvedev at a nuclear security summit in South Korea in March,
when Obama was overheard saying he would have more flexibility to work
with Russia on missile defense after the U.S. presidential election.Republicans pounced on
the remark, saying the president has a hidden agenda that could include
concessions to the Russians if he wins re-election.Russian opposition to U.S. and
NATO plans for a missile defense shield in Europe was the subtext
of a surprise announcement earlier this spring of a change in venue
for the G-8 meeting. The summit was long planned to take place
adjacent to a larger summit of NATO leaders in Chicago.Putin let it
be known that he did not wan
make a difference in close swing states. Moreover, it could boost
fundraising for social conservative groups that are mounting their own campaigns against
Obama and galvanize conservatives still uncertain about Romney's commitment to their causes."Twenty-four
hours ago, we were talking about what Romney had to do to
get social conservatives on board," said Ralph Reed, chairman of the conservative
Faith & Freedom Coalition. "Now, they're scrambling for a seat in first
class."Clooney's dinner Thursday evening was organized by Jeffrey Katzenberg, the CEO of
DreamWorks Animation, and will include such celebrity guests as Robert Downey Jr.
and Barbra Streisand. The event was initially to be a spring gala
hosted by Katzenberg at his house.But Katzenberg's home is under renovation, so
