ial activities."Roughly
half the department budget pays staff, which is far more than at
other agencies. The department argues that the sequester cuts, then, have
a significant impact on services -- seasonal hiring, for instance, had to
be drastically cut back, which impacts programs at national parks. Federal
agencies have each responded differently to the sequester. The Federal Aviation
Administration rattled lawmakers after it furloughed air traffic controllers,
leading to delays at major U.S. airports. Congress, though, intervened by
allowing the FAA to move money around, in turn canceling those furloughs. The
private business community also has stepped in. At Yellowstone National
Park, two cities stepped up when the National Park Service decided to
save money by plowing snow two weeks later than usual. This would
have delayed the clearing of four park gates well past the typical
May 1 opening, so city officials held a fundraiser and collected enough
money to pay the state to clear the roads, ensuring the gates
will be open on time.Coburn cited this as a positive example in
his letter, and urged the department to find more savings."I believe the
Department can continue to maintain this same level access even under sequestration,"
he wrote. "To accomplish this, the Department must prioritize its core mission,
eliminate unnecessary, wasteful, and duplicative programs, and find innovative
ways to do more with less."
service
area to participate.Under the program, the locality pays 10 percent of the
cost of about $6,500 for installing the charging station, as well as
the cost of the electricity. In mid-January, Watertown dropped its proposal
to install electric-car charging stations in the city parking lot altogether.Instead,
earlier this month, National Grid announced that it would install charging
stations in the parking lot of a Tops supermarket in Pamelia, the
town directly north of Waterown.Watertown is known largely for its position
as the last major city before the state's Canadian border to the
north, as well as its 112 inches of average annual snowfall.Since most
early plug-in electric cars will mostly be recharged via privately owned
charging stations inside the owners' garages, the decision to keep free
charging off city property won't make or break electric cars in the
upstate city. But it does point out some of the unexpected hurdles and
pitfalls that electric-car proponents can encounter as they work to install
public charging infrastructure.Left unanswered is the question of whether
city governments providing free parking also runs afoul of the New York
state constitution.

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">and every page. When the first draft of the application turned out
to be a clunker, "immediately, everybody sat around the table and said,
`Well, this is too long, especially...in this age of the Internet,"' Obama
recounted. "`People aren't going to have the patience to sit there for
hours on end. Let's streamline this thing."'His administration is open to
making improvements, Obama added: "Those kinds of refinements, we're going
to be working on."Consumers will start getting familiar with the new applications
less than six months from now, on Oct. 1, when new insurance
markets open for enrollment in every state. Most people with job-based benefits
will not have to bother with the applications, only the uninsured.Under
the law, middle-class people who don't get coverage through their jobs will
be able to purchase private insurance. Most will be able to get
tax credits, based on their incomes, to make their premiums more affordable.
Low-income uninsured people will be steered to government programs like
Medicaid.Benefits begin Jan. 1, and nearly 30 million uninsured Americans
are eventually expected to get coverage. While the first drafts of the applications
were widely panned, the new forms were seen as an improvement. Still,
consumers must provide a snapshot of their finances to see if they
qualify for help. That potentially includes multiple sources of income --
from alimony, to tips, to regular paychecks."Given the amount of information
an eagerness to play around without
knowing what exactly to do. The lesson: Read the directions.Tap the touch-sensitive
temple piece or simply tilt your head up and the screen activates,
displaying the time and two words: Ok Glass. Speak them aloud and
the voice-activated device gives you a menu with a few simple options:
Google, take a picture, record a video, get directions, send a message,
make a call, hang out.Ask the device to Google something and, thanks
to a Bluetooth link to your smartphone or the built-in Wi-Fi, it
will search the Web almost immediately. I tried Googling the length of
the Golden Gate bridge (8,980 feet), how to say I love you
in Japanese (Watashi wa anata o aishite), and checking the weather (No,
it isnt raining in New York, the weather is 58 and clear). The
future is a robotic voice literally telling me to skip the raincoat,
apparently.Pictures with Glass are reasonably good; it has a 5 megapixel
camera, comparable to that of a newish smartphone. Thats not the greatest
quality, but it works. I immediately found myself wanting to edit images,
crop out the backgrounds and boost the colors. You can do that
all on Google+, of course, but theres little interface directly through
Glass itself. The real charm of Glass comes in sharing, however, not touching
your temples. Glass integrates deeply with Google+, which youre probably
a member of already, like it or not. Its no Facebook, sure,
but it does have tens of mill
