President Obama on Thursday chose two old friends with business executive
experience for top posts on his economic team, naming longtime fundraiser
Penny Pritzker to the Commerce Department and adviser Michael Froman as
U.S. Trade Representative.Pritzker, a Hyatt hotel heiress, businesswoman
and philanthropist, is Obama's pick to fill a Cabinet post that has
been vacant since former Secretary John Bryson resigned after he said he
suffered a seizure that led to a series of traffic collisions.Froman is
one of Obama's law school classmates and senior economic advisers who previously
worked as an executive at Citigroup. The Cabinet-level trade post performs
as the administration's top adviser and negotiator on international trade.
If confirmed by the Senate, Froman would replace Ron Kirk, a former
Dallas mayor who stepped down as trade representative in February after
serving in the post throughout Obama's first term.Obama made the announcements
in the White House Rose Garden just before departing for Mexico. The
nominations, which require Senate confirmation, complete Obama's picks to
fill his second-term Cabinet.Obama said the two will help fulfill his top
priority to grow the economy and create middle class jobs."I intend to
work both of them to the bone as soon as they are
official," Obama said to laughter from a crowd that included the nominees'
families and administration staff. If confirmed, Pritzker would become the

President Obama has signed into law a bill to end furloughs of
air traffic controllers. The furloughs stemmed from the automatic, across-the-board
spending cuts that started taking effect in March.Millions of air travelers
were affected recently by delayed flights across the country because of
the furloughs.Congress moved quickly on a fix, despite Obama's preference
that the cuts be replaced all at once rather than piecemeal.A typo
in the legislation delayed getting the bill to Obama, but Congress worked
out the glitch Tuesday, and the president signed it Wednesday. The bill lets
the FAA transfer around as much as $253 million to prevent staffing
reductions through September, when the current budget year ends. The FAA
had started resuming normal operations in anticipation of Obama signing
the measure.

<p style="font-size:xx-small;">GUATEMALA CITY The Guatemalan government has declared a state of emergency
and banned public gatherings in four townships east of the capital following
clashes between police and anti-mining protesters.Interior Minister Mauricio
Lopez Bonilla said Thursday police and soldiers have been sent to the
towns, but did not say how many. The decree allows them to
temporarily make detentions, conduct searches and question suspects outside
the normal legal framework.Residents held a series of protests over the
last week against the Canadian-owned Escobal silver mine, about 40 miles
(70 kms) east of Guatemala City. The mine recently received operating permits.
Residents fear it will pollute water supplies.Six protesters were wounded
by gunfire from mine security guards Sunday. Other protesters then seized
23 police officers who were later freed.
nd his allies insisted that the momentum in
the civil war is now in their favor and that the world's
reluctance to intervene in the conflict is more evidence that the Assad
regime is regaining its hold on the country.Obama signaled Tuesday he would
consider U.S. military action against Syria if "hard, effective evidence"
is found to bolster intelligence that chemical weapons have been used in
the civil war. Damascus has denied it has used chemical weapons, saying
the Syrian rebels are trying to frame the regime. The U.S. has provided
humanitarian aid to the Syrians and helped bolster the defenses along the
borders in neighboring Turkey and Jordan, but has preferred to let other
nations send in more lethal assistance.A key obstacle in the debate over
providing weapons has been U.S. concerns that any U.S. weapons would end
up in the hands of Al Qaeda-linked groups helping the Syrian opposition
or any of the other extremist groups in the region, such as
Lebanon-based Hezbollah.Last month, the head of the extremist Jabhat al-Nusra
group, one of the most powerful and effective rebel groups in Syria,
pledged allegiance to Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri. U.S. officials
say that since then they have seen anecdotal evidence and intelligence assessments
that suggest that al-Nusra's gains within Syria have slowed, both because
of the group's public links to Al Qaeda and the U.S. designation
of al-Nusra as a terrorist organization. Other oppositi
